Poll: Tennessee Boys Performer Of The Week Aug. 29 - Sep. 3

Performer of the Week

Every week this season we will be conducting a poll from beginning Monday and ending Thursday to highlight performances from the previous week. This will give us an opportunity to showcase the best talent in Tennessee. Though some athletes will likely run times every week that are worthy of being in the poll, our goal is to cast a wide net and showcase a vast array of athletes from all parts of the state.

Will Douglas - Camden Central

Even though Will Douglas has two state championships to his name, I would argue Saturday's victory at Mike Rose Soccer Complex was the biggest of his career. The senior from Camden outlasted a field of over 400 that showcased some of the best runners from our state as well as Missouri, Arkansas, and Mississippi.

Douglas's 15:41 was 14 seconds faster than at this meet last year and nine second better than runner up.

Brent Lyons - Arlington

The second Tennessean across the finish line in the varsity division on Saturday at Memphis Twilight was Brent Lyons. The senior from Arlington finished 10th overall with a 16:23 which is a 24 second improvement over his time here last season. A 21st place finish at state as a junior has clearly propelled Lyons into his final high school campaign which opened with a victory at a meet last week in Mississippi.

Lyons currently sits atop the Region 8 Rankings where he finished 8th at last season.

Nate Shingleton - Station Camp

Consistency has been an issue for Nate Shingleton over his last two seasons. In both his 2020 and 2021 campaigns, you'll find times on his profile above eighteen minutes and below 16:40. This season however is starting to tell a different story. So far through two races, Shingleton has not run over the seventeen minute mark most recently posting a 16:46 en route to a "runner up" finish at his home course on Thursday night.

Shingleton has run at the state meet twice with his best finish being 88th place. If he can maintain this current trajectory, he should be able to improve on last year's placement.

Matteo Tonnos - Farragut

Based on who we knew was returning for Farragut from last season, we already knew they were going to be hard to beat. Throw in another runner capable of laying down a 16:30 at Victor Ashe and it raises the bar even farther. This is Matteo Tonnos' first year in Tennessee after moving here from CA. No, not California this time... Canada. Tonnos placed third overall with a time that would've won the race just last year. I'll be curious to see how he does on the notoriously fast and flat Cherokee course next weekend. Nevertheless, welcome to America.

Farragut runners placed 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 narrowly missing a perfect score.
