Salute to Seniors: Titus Winders

Titus Winders had a remarkable career running for Henry County High School.

He brought home a lot of hardware in the state of Tennessee from the fall to the spring. It culminated in a couple of state championships on the track and cross country courses.

Winders is our first featured athlete in our "Salute to Seniors" series.

What was your most memorable race/competition?

Cross Country State senior year when I won and my little brother was 2nd.

Where did you face your biggest competition?

Hard to put just one race. Brooks PR and Footlocker Nationals had the best field of runners. But so many races in high school were great competition.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?

Winning state for cross country. It was a goal I set in middle school, so achieving it meant more then I can explain.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?

I wish everyday that I would've pushed myself harder as a freshman and sophomore. I used to worry about being the best in my grade, but now I realize the first place trophy is ONLY awarded to the 1st person across the finish line. I also believe I would've been better at the end of high school if I would've worked harder earlier on.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My ego. Sometimes I believed I was better than I was. And in my opinion that's one of the worst things for a runner.

What will you miss the most?

Two main things: my teammates and the friends I've made along the way. So hopefully I'll see them in college.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Work as hard as possible because the upperclassmen don't play around in the races. Remember they give the trophies to the best, not to someone who is good for their grade but the best in the race.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals overall?

Yes extremely. My dad is my coach and he did such a good job. Without him I would be clueless on running. But also coaches from other schools as well have motivated me. The coaches from Brentwood Academy, mainly David Hudson. Also the coaches from Daniel Boone HS. And Coach Sexton for his advice. I wish I could list them all because I've gain valuable knowledge from so many coaches.

What are your post-high school plans?

I will be attending the University of Southern Indiana. And will continue to run cross country and track.

Any shoutouts?

To both of my brothers.  My older brother Javan for always motivating me to be better and encouraging me. And Silas, my little brother, for always being there to push me and make sure I don't slack up.
