Boone, N.C. (Jan. 17, 2009) --- The Milligan College men's and women's track and field teams ran in the Appalachian State University (Boone, N.C.) Indoor Meet on Saturday. The Buffs took down a school record in the process.
In the field events, freshman Tanner Payne (Georgetown, Tenn.) set the school’s shot put record at 11.20 meters (38 feet 1 ½ inches) replacing Justin Westerman’s 36”8.75’ throw. Senior Jamal Phelps (Chicago, Ill.) also did well for the Buffs jumping to sixth place in the triple jump with a 43”6.5’.
On the running side, the men’s 1K event placed second, third, and fourth consecutively. Junior Aaron Wood (Aurora, Co.) placed second with a time of 2:36. Freshman Caleb Hughes (Christiansburg, Va.) ran in 2:37 for third, while freshman Brendan Hawkins (Limestone, Tenn.) finished in 2:44 which was good enough for fourth place.
Sophomore Chelsea Leavell (Springfield, Tenn.) led the Lady Buffs in the field events by placing an impressive third in the weight throw with a 45”5.25’.
“We needed this meet to blow of the rust from Christmas Break and we have work to do if we’re going to meet our goals indoors,” commented Head Coach Chris Layne.
The Buffs and Lady Buffs will race next on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Middle Tennessee Classic in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
