The first Nashville City Track Meet Championship
was held in 1953 under the name of the Banner Relays sponsored by the Nashville
Banner afternoon newspaper and was won by T.P.S. The boy's meet remained under
the sponsorship of the Nashville Banner until 1986. At that time, the Optimist
Relays, which had been a regional meet started in 1960, took over the boy's
city championship in 1987 and the Banner Relays became a regional Mid State
track meet. The Optimist Relays continued the meet until the early 1990s when
the Murfreesboro Road Optimist Club dropped sponsorship of the meet and the
meet became the Nashville Track and Field Championships which has run
continuously until today. The Metro girl's championship was started by the
Optimist Relays in 1966, which was first won by Haynes, and has continued to be
the girl's Metro championship when the meet transitioned to its current
Nashville Track and Field Championships. We are happy to announce that this
will be the 67th straight year of the boy's championship, the 54th straight
year of the girls championship, and the 60th straight year of the Optimist
Relays/Nashville Track and Field Championships. The Optimist Relays/ Nashville
Track and Field Championships has only been held at four sites in the past,
Overton, TPS, McGavock, and Harpeth Hall. We hope all Metro Nashville schools
will join in the celebration of this continuing event now returning back to the
Harpeth Hall School for the 2019 track season
