Turchin Earns NCAA Championships Bid in 5K

COLUMBIA, Mo. –- Chattanooga distance runner Kathleen Turchin earned a spot in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships placing fifth in the 5000 meter run Friday evening at the Audrey J. Walton Soccer and Track Stadium in Columbia, Mo.

Turchin, a cross country All-American, ran a personal best time of 16:25.27 climbing toward the front of the pack as the race drew to a close. This marks the second time in her career that the Sugar Hill, Ga., junior has qualified for the nationals. She placed 14th in the 2005 NCAA Nationals in the 5000-meters after earning an at-large bid.

“It’s unbelievable how well she’s running,” UTC head coach Bill Gautier said. “I thought she was going to finish sixth or seventh. It’s awesome.”

Lanni Marchant, the Southern Conference cross country Female Runner-of-the-Year, finished 16th in the 5k with a time of 16:57.87. While not earning an automatic qualification, she will learn her fate as declarations are made next week. The London, Ontario senior gained a provisional qualification in the 10,000 meter run earlier this season at the Stanford Invitational, the same event in which she qualified for the nationals last year, placing 15th overall.

The NCAA Championships will be held June 6-9 in Sacramento, Calif.
