Pearl Cohn, Alcoa: Why They Won Division I Class A

Alcoa Boys

Back to Back

This is going to read as if I copy and pasted last year's "Why they won" article into this one because this match up between the Alcoa Tornados and the Pearl-Cohn Firebirds played out pretty close to how it did in 2021. Barion Brown did his thing in the sprints, Alcoa grabbed points in every way that they could, and at the end of the night the Tornados ended up on top. Here's the breakdown.

The difference between these teams last year was only 4.5 points and even though Coach Davis did every thing he could this season to make up that spread (running Brown in 3 open sprints, putting athletes in the Decathlon)  the gulf only grew. This is in large part due to the fact that while he was able to match the Tornadoes in the points scored in the relays, the field, and the sprints the Firebirds could not counteract the Tornados ability to score points in races involving distances 800m or over. Here's a breakdown of the points Alcoa amassed over these events.

Outgoing Senior Abdul Jaber had a busy day placing 2nd in the 3200, 3rd in the 1600m, and 6th in the 800m. Fellow senior Robbie Soulier was the only other to score individual points in an open distance edging Jaber in the 800m placing 5th. Where Pearl was able to score in the above mentioned events was the 4x800m relay where they finished 3rd but an event where the Tornados got the victory with Jaber anchoring and Soulier running as well.

Alcoa's only other victories in the meet much like last season came in the Horizontal Jumps where Jordan Harris and Charles Newman won the Long and Triple Jump competitions for the second year in a row with Newman placing runner up behind Harris in the long and also winning the Decathlon the previous week.

Charles "Major" Newman finishes the season ranked #3 overall in Tennessee in the Triple Jump across all classifications. Will attend West Point this fall.

With critical point scorers like Newman and Abdul graduating for the Tornados and Barion Brown for the Firebirds it'll be interesting to see which team can rebuild going into next season. Should be a fun competition as it has been for the last two seasons nevertheless.
