American High School senior Ari Cogdell led the Patriots to a runner-up finish at the 4A state championships finishing 4th in the open 400m, and anchoring the school's winning 4x400m relay. His 46.67 at the 4A Region 4 Championships is the fastest returning time in the state for the upcoming season, and sixth fastest in the nation. In addition to that nationally ranked time, his anchor leg at the Golden South Classic gave American a US#2 time of 3:12.12. Cogdell recently announced he will continue his running career as a member of the University of Tennessee Volunteers. We caught up with the quarter-mile standout to talk about the recruiting process, his decision, and future goals.

Lolo Jones named to U.S. bobsled team Oct 26, 2012

5:52PM EDT October 25. 2012 - Lolo Jones took the next step Thursday toward making the U.S. Olympic team in a second sport. The hurdles star was named to the U.S. bobsled team Thursday morning as a push athlete. Jones finished second in a team selection race with pilot Jazmine Fenlator on Saturday. "This is a breath of fresh air — cool, very cool, cold air," Jones said. She joins 2010 Olympic bobsledder Emily Azevedo, world championship medalist Katie Eberling and track and field athletes Tianna Madison, Aja Evans and Cherrelle Garrett.  (via

Jacob Blankenship Clears 17-1 for New State Record in the Pole Vault May 18, 2012

Jacob Blankenship set the OHSAA All-Division record in the Pole Vault by clearing a height of 17-1 (OH #1,US #3) Thursday night at the Division 1 Central District Meet at Hilliard Darby.  Blankenship's vault bests the previous state record of 17-0 that he and Joey Uhle (Olentangy Liberty) both set last year.  Blankenship has a personal best vault of 17-6.5 that he set during an indoor competion at Oberlin this year.

College signings are always interesting to see, but everybody wonders why one athlete chose one schol and why another athlete chose a different school.  Inside you will find out why certain athletes chose the school that they did in their own words.  This article will be updated throughout February as more responses are returned.  


 J.J. Clark, who led the Lady Volunteers to a pair of NCAA National Championships and six Southeastern Conference titles during his seven seasons as head coach, has been chosen to lead a combined men’s and women’s track & field/cross country program at the University of Tennessee, Director of Men’s Athletics Mike Hamilton and Director of Women’s Athletics Joan Cronan announced jointly on Monday.             “It’s a great honor to be entrusted with the combined men’s and women’s track & field program at the University of Tennessee,” Clark said. “I have great respect for the tradition of the men’s program at UT. I recognize the responsibility associated with leading this program. We intend to compete for championships.”


 A pair of throwers, a sprinter and a multi-eventer have signed national letters of intent to join the University of Tennessee women’s track & field program, Lady Vol head coach J.J. Clark announced Monday.             Throwers Aslynn Halvorson of Charlotte, N.C. and Jessie Harrison of Collierville, Tenn., as well as sprinter Kia Jackson of Lithonia, Ga., and Kirstyn Sweeney of Nashville, will be joining the reigning NCAA and SEC Indoor Champion Big Orange in the fall.

Kelsey Kane commits to the UT Lady Vols May 7, 2008

 West High School standout distance runner Kelsey Kane will commit to the UT Lady Vols on Thursday.  Kelsey following in the footsteps of her mother Missy will run cross country and track for the Lady Vols.  Kane heading into this weeks Region Championships and the Tennessee State Championships is a perennial All-State performer for Knoxville West High School.

Sure, they're thankful because they have been blessed with talent, and a work ethic second to none. And they're thankful they have finally made their college selections this past week  – Krais to UCLA and Price to Tennessee.They're thankful they have teammates and coaches who have supported them during their decision-making process - to the point in one case of doing research on schools way above and beyond what you'd expect.


 A native of Warrenton, Va., and a graduate of Fauquier (FOCK-ier) High School, Bowman collected the second SEC cross country weekly honor of her career and the first by a Lady Vol since Katie Flaute was recognized on Oct. 4, 2005.  Bowman did so by winning the Belmont Opener in Nashville on Aug. 31 with a career-best 4,000-meter clocking of 14 minutes, 00.58 seconds on an 87-degree evening in Music City.


The Tennessee men s cross country team was chosen to finish fourth in the SEC this season, the conference announced Monday. Our preseason ranking is respectable, head coach George Watts said. I expect several SEC teams to be ranked in the preseason NCAA poll. We will not be satisfied with a fourth-place finish, but I believe it is a good starting point.
