For over 45 years the Volunteer Track Classic has been a fixture on the Southeastern high school track and field schedules. This year should be no different. A National Scholastic Sports Foundation (www.nssf.org) Select meet, the 2009 Vol Classic will see the inclusion of collegiate competition as the UT Lady Vol College sections bring in the 2009 NCAA Indoor Champion Lady Vols, Alabama, Ohio State and Carson Newman College. On the high school side the action should be great on the track as well as the field as numerous nationally ranked teams and individuals start competition Friday at 5PM.
An old-fashioned dual meet with Texas A&M and a trip to New York City highlight the indoor slate, and a trio of home events and the annual trek to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays headline the outdoor itinerary on the 2009 University of Tennessee women’s track & field schedule, released Tuesday by Lady Vol Head Coach J.J. Clark.
A look at the top match-ups and performers from this weekend.
Virginia had two event winners on Friday at the Volunteer Track Classic. While not near her personal best, Atlee senior Emma Dejarnette became a two-time meet champion in Knoxville with a 11'6" clearance in the girls' pole vault. Another winner was Blacksburg junior Sarah Dorrell of Blacksburg in the girls' 2000 meter steeplechase. Dorrell saw a 28 second improvement from her debut in the event last year at the same meet with a 7:43.66 victory. While not winning their races, both Joanna Stevens and George Carter of Blacksburg ran impressive times in the final event of the evening in the two mile run. Stevens, the Group AA state indoor 1600 meter champion moved up in distance to run the state's fastest time and first sub 11 performance of the season in 10:59.90 for third place. The Blacksburg sophomore Carter made a considerable improvement from his previous personal best to finish third as well in a time of 9:19.91 for full 2 miles. Volunteer Track Classic - Live Results
