Independence “Coed” Relays 2013

Thompson’s Station, TN

Meet Information

Sixth Annual Independence Coed Twilight Relays
Independence High School - Friday, April 12, 2013

Format: It is a unique all-relay meet in which every running relay is composed of 2 boys and 2 girls from the same school. For example, the 4x400 relay would go girl-boy-girl-boy. There is no girls 4x400 or boys 4x400, just the coed 4x400. Instead of having a boys and girls team division, there is only one team champion here. This meet is a welcome break from the traditional order of events just before the calendar turns to May and things gets more serious. It is fun for coaches and athletes to try to put together combinations in relays that have certainly never been run before!

Field Events: Field events will be scored as a 2-person team. Girls and boys will contest the field events as they normally do and then the top boy and girl from each school will have their marks added together into a single mark. For example, if your best girl high jumper goes out at 4 8 and your best boy goes out at 6, then the high jump result for your school will be 10 8. You will be allowed 2 boys and 2 girls in each contested field event, so that you may have two pairs to score and you may be able to score a maximum of two places in each field event.

*We will contest every field event except for the triple jump. Shot put, discus and long jump athletes will get three attempts each. Later in the meet, we will have a special 4x100 relay race for the throwers. You may select two boys and two girls who contested either the shot put or the discus to run the exciting Buffalo 4x100 relay. This relay will not count in the team scoring, but will be eligible for awards. Coaches may be asked to assist in the running off the field events; any field assignments would be discussed at the 3:45 coaches meeting.

Awards: T-Shirts will be awarded to the top 3 teams in each event.

Fees: Entry fees will be a flat $120 for each school. Fees must be received by FRIDAY, April 5 to assure entry. See contact/mailing info at the end of this letter.

Schedule
3:45 pm: Coaches meeting at the finish line. Coaches will also receive two tickets per school for a free dinner from the concession stand they may redeem at any point during the evening.
4 pm: All field events starting with pole vault, girls shot, boys discus, boys long jump, girls high jump
*Also at 4 pm will be the 4x1600m relay and the exhibition 3200m. There could be a half hour break on the track between the 3200m and the hurdles, so those in field events and early running events may need to get back and forth a bit to expedite the meet in a timely fashion.

Running Events
In a reverse of last years order (as we alternate each year), all relays will be run in a girl boy girl boy order as section vs. time finals based upon seed time.
The 3200m run is a non-scoring event this year for the long distance runners that might be overlooked in a relay meet. The 3200m run will award the top 3 finishers medals (but not shirts). The exhibition 3x400m Coaches Relay is purely for the entertainment of our athletes.
