The marker commemorating Daniel Boone’s two state cross country championships in front of the school just off Highway 75 is the most photographed spot in Gray, Tennessee. Yet sophomore ‘Blazier harrier Adam Barnard and his teammates believe there should be another reason for the cameras to pop.

“That sign represents a legacy,” said Barnard referencing the 1981 and 1998 stat titles, “but there’s room for a ‘2012’ up there, too. That’s what we’re hoping to do and that’s what we’re working towards…the November 3 state meet.”

Until then, Boone and Barnard are blazing their way through the trails of the early season. Barnard and the Trailblazers have three wins in three tries starting with the season-opening Twilight Two-Miler on their home course and then the Cherokee Classic in Knoxville, where Barnard bettered his personal best by 36 seconds with a time of 15:54.

Barnard was honored as the latest Keller-Williams Athlete of the Week Award following the meet at Cherokee Park.

“It was pretty neat that my team also came out on top,” explained Barnard. We beat Bearden, who finished as the state runner-up last year, by 40 points. That was bigger than my accomplishments so all the credit goes to my teammates.”

Still, Barnard’s start to the season has been one of the neat stories of the early fall season. While Barnard may have been a largely unknown quantity to some, Boone head coach Lynn Jeffers has seen the development and work ethic of Barnard first-hand and isn’t surprised at his success.

“I’ve been around him a little over a year and watched him train and set goals,” Jeffers said. “Plus, he’s got some incredible teammates so he’s not out there training by himself. He’s had the benefit of having some teammates who push him and they train well together.”

The success for Boone continued Saturday at the Becky Selfe Invitational in Glade Spring, Virginia. Showing their team solidarity, Barnard and Roderick Bowman crossed the finish line arm-in-arm for a first place tie. Chad Whitehead finished fifth and James Garst and Jordan Roth added a tie for seventh to lead the ‘Blazers to a resounding team title. None of those five are seniors, including the sophomore Barnard.

“I had a good freshman year last year,” added Barnard. “I didn’t really find myself and find my way as a runner until this year.”

If Barnard and the ‘Blazers continue what’s already been a remarkable season, more and more cameras will find their way to that photogenic spot at Daniel Boone High School.
