Sprint champ LaQuisha Jackson's season over

The most decorated female high school track athlete in state history won't be able to add to the list of her TSSAA accomplishments. Howard sprinter LaQuisha Jackson has had to withdraw from competition for the rest of her senior season because of an injury that affects her back and hip.

Jackson first noticed pain in her right hip during a competition at Disney World in March and hasn't competed since.

"The most frustrating thing for me is right now the doctors aren't sure what's causing the pain," Jackson said. "I'm supposed to go back in a couple of weeks after some rest, but right now all I know is I can't run. I'm disappointed, but getting healthy comes first. I have to make sure I get my body right for the next step in my life."

Jackson signed a scholarship with San Diego State in February, choosing the Aztecs over offers from Tennessee and Florida.

Rated the nation's No. 2 prep sprinter, Jackson owns nine individual or team state championships, holds state records in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and set an AAU national record in the 400. She has never lost an individual sprint race.

She became the fastest sprinter in the state as a freshman and set TSSAA records in the 100 and 200 meters the following season.

"We just found out that she needs to shut it down for a while, and we're all disappointed," Howard coach Jennifer Mitchell said. "She was really looking forward to trying to break her own records at the state meet, but the most important thing for her right now is to get healthy."
