CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University women's track and
field team continues the indoor season at Southern Illinois' Saluki Open, in
Carbondale, Ill.
After a school-record triple jump, last week
at the Ed Temple Classic, sophomore Cenitra Hudson highlights a talented group
of Lady Govs field athletes. Hudson's triple jump mark, which bested an APSU
record held by Hall of Famer Ayesha Maycock, currently stands atop the Ohio
Valley Conference best list.
The Lady Govs also will feature sophomore
Leigha Tolliver, a long jump specialist, along with up-and-coming freshman
thrower Destiny Wilks, who established a 13.41m weight throw distance in her
first collegiate event. Freshman high jumper April Holman, meanwhile, is
looking to improve her 1.62m mark set at the MTSU Christmas Invite, in
December.
Senior Chiamaka Obi has been the Lady Govs
most consistent track performer, with her 57.56 400m mark currently the league's
second-best. Obi is one of seven Lady Govs who will run the 400m race, Saturday,
joined Jasmin Scott, Taelor Slaughter, Alyx Pinkston, Ashley Carson, Diamond Knox and Candace Cullors.
"We are simply looking to continue improving,"
head coach Doug Molnar said. "Our times have been solid, and indicative of the
work these girls have put in over the past few months. We still have room to
improve in several events - particularly in the relays and with our inexperienced
throwers. We are becoming more well rounded as a team through each meet and
that's encouraging."
Perhaps the most exciting event for Austin
Peay will be the relays, where the Lady Govs have covered the most ground thus
far through the indoor season. The distance medley team - Kendra Kirksey,
Slaughter, Shannon Christian and Janelle Avery - have the league's third-best
time, while 4x400m team - Carson, Scott, Slaughter and Obi - have the OVC's
fourth-best mark.
