CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University men's cross
country team continues its postseason schedule with the NCAA South Regional Championships
10-kilometer race beginning at 10:45 a.m., Saturday at Veterans Park in
Birmingham, Ala.
The Governors will look to maintain an effort that led to
a fifth-place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships, Oct. 30. It
was their best finish at the OVC finale since 1999. They will have their hands
full at the regional with 32 teams competing, including No. 6 Florida and No.
25 Alabama. The Crimson Tide is the defending South Regional champion, winning
by 25 points, the Govs finished 24th in last season's event.
Junior Enock Langat has led the Govs in all of this season's
races to date, but this will be his season's first event at the 10-kilometer
distance. In last season's regional, he finished 99th with a time of 33:30.47
in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Sophomore Geofrey Kosgei has been the Govs No. 2 runner
this season and also has experience at the 10-kilometer distance, finishing
71st at last season's South Central regional with a time of 33:46.10 while at
Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The other Govs runner with regionals experience is junior
Boniface Yator (a time of 35:32.59 last season) and sophomores Evan Collins
(37:29.72) and Konnor Kessler (37:51.95). Saturday's event will be a first-time
experience for freshmen Tyler Kepley and Genaro Martinez.
