Scott recipient of 2010-11 Skeeter Scholarship

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's track and field athlete Jasmine Scott has been awarded the 20010-11 recipient of the "Skeeter" Scholarship, sponsored by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Clarksville Alumnae Chapter.

Scott, a Chattanooga native, is the third overall recipient of the award that honors the legacy of the late Wilma "Skeeter" Rudolph, the Clarksville native who overcame several physical hardships to become the first American female to win three track and field goals medals in a single Olympics, 1960, in Rome. Rudolph died, Nov. 12, 1994, at age 54, from brain cancer. Rudolph was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

The scholarship is awarded yearly to a female track athlete. The recipients alternate between student athletes at Austin Peay, her hometown school, and Tennessee State, her alma mater. Former Lady Govs track and field star Leanne White was the inaugural beneficiary in 2008-09.

Scott, who will be a junior in 2010-11, received the award recently at the annual Wilma Skeeter Rudolph Dinner. She specializes in the short-distance events, in particular the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter run.

In 2010 Indoor season, Scott compiled three top 10 finishes in the 400 meters, with an overall 58.35 time her best in the Ohio Valley Conference championship, good enough for a seventh-place finish.

During the outdoor season, she ran the 100- and 200-meter dashes to go along with the 400 meters, where she finished the season with a pair of top-10 finishes - second (58.32) at the Spring Fling and seventh (58.55) at the OVC Championships.

Off the track, Scott is a health care management major with a minor in business. A three-time Athletics Director's Honor Roll member, she owns a 3.024 grade-point average.
