Lady Govs finish fourth in rain-shortened OVC Championships

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's track and field team continues moving in the right direction in the Ohio Valley Conference, finishing fourth in the 2010 OVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 67.50 points.

"We really came together as a team and pulled some events out," said head coach Doug Molnar. "We're going in the right direction and getting better every year."

Eastern Illinois took both the men and women's titles for indoor and outdoor track and field for the second year in a row. Austin Peay just squeaked past host Tennessee Tech by a half point for fourth place.

Track carried the day for the Lady Govs, beginning with junior Chiamaka Obi, who won the 400-meter dash with a career-best 55.17 mark, just three tenths of a second behind the fastest mark in the OVC this season. She also earned a point in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing eighth with a 1:19.84 time.

"Obi came from way back in the 400 and did an incredible job," said Molnar. "She had to come right back about 20 minutes later and run the hurdles, which I think hurt her, but I certainly can't fault her effort."

Junior Jasmin Scott finished seventh in the 400-meter dash with a 58.55 mark, while freshman Ashley Carson finished ahead of Obi in the 400-meter hurdles, placing sixth with a 1:06.45 mark.

Senior Amanda McCoy, still recovering from strep throat, finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.31 mark, while freshman Leigha Tolliver earned a seventh-place showing in the same event with a 14.92 time.

"McCoy's strep throat was terrible timing, but she ran a competitive race," said Molnar.

The relay teams had respectable showings, with the 4x100-meter team finishing fifth in a 48.06 time. The 4x400-meter team finished sixth, with a 3:57.86 mark.

In the field events, Hudson again shined, finishing fifth in the triple jump with an 11.30 meter (37-01.00) leap. Junior Courtney Jordan also earned points in the javelin, finishing fourth with a 34.57 meter (113-05) throw.

"NeNe and Jordan stepped up big for us; without them, I don't know what would have happened," said Molnar. "The weather was bad and hurt us a little bit, but it was the same for everyone. I'm proud of how our team stepped up for this meet."

Final stats will be provided when updated by the Ohio Valley Conference.
