Hurdlers pace Lady Govs track effort in Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -Led by its hurdlers, Austin Peay State University's track team had a strong showing, Saturday, during the second day of the 2010 Alabama Relays, being held at the Sam Bailey Track and Field Complex in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Senior Amanda McCoy finished fifth in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 14.30 seconds-McCoy also had a personal-best 5-feet,7-inch high jump. In addition, junior Chiamaka Obi finished eighth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.53 while freshman Ashley Carson ended 16th with 1:05.68. Those are the top two outdoor 400-meter hurdle times so far this spring in the Ohio Valley Conference.

"It was a very strong day for us in the hurdles," APSU coach Doug Molnar said. "Amanda McCoy had another impressive day, both in the hurdles and in the high jump.  Obi again performed well in the 400 meter hurdles and Carson gave us a huge lift in that event.  They are two that are going to have be reckoned with in the OVCs."

Senior Molly Bartkiewicz finished fourth in the pole vault with a vault of 11-11.75. Freshman Leigha Tolliver had the Lady Govs other Top 10 finish with a ninth in the long jump at 18-01.75. She also took 15th in the 100-meter hurdles with a 15.00 time.

"It was a tough day for the field events, because of the wind," Molnar said. "Competitors would keep passing because of a head wind and then it would change direction to a tail wind. It was a frustrating day for them."

The competition will be completed Sunday a few more field events plus several relay competitions.
