Lady Govs track prepares for Alabama Relays

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's track and field team will travel to one of the most prestigious track events in the south, Saturday, when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the Alabama Relays.

"Alabama has great facilities and we traditionally do very well here," said head coach Doug Molnar.

On the track last weekend at APSU's Spring Fling, the Lady Govs received strong performances from freshman Ashley Carson and junior Chiamaka Obi and hope to continue to build on that foundation this week. Obi will make her season debut in the 400-meter hurdles this week.

"Carson and Obi will give us a solid duo in the hurdles," said Molnar. "I was very pleased with Carson's effort last week and hope she builds on that momentum."

The Lady Govs will be without one of their biggest field stars, with senior Carrie Burggraf nursing a bicep injury this weekend. Classmate and fellow pole vaulter Molly Bartkiewicz will be leaned on even more heavily than usual, while sophomore Brianna Lococo will try to replace Burggraf.

"We're a little banged up this week," said Molnar. "In addition to Carrie, Candace Johnson hurt herself in the 400-meter relay and will be out of action as well. Hopefully, we'll get everyone back in time for next weekend's home meet."
