Lady Govs track and field opens at home with Spring Fling

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women's track and field team opened its outdoor season at home, Saturday, inside Governors Stadium for the Spring Fling.

"It was a good first meet back, especially after a long break," said head coach Doug Molnar. "You never know how much practice goes on during Spring break, but they looked like they did some practicing."

Aside from the Lady Govs, teams competed in both men and women's events from Belmont, Alabama-Huntsville, Lipscomb Western Kentucky.

On the track, junior Chiamaka Obi won the 400-meter dash, beating teammate Jasmine Scott by .59 seconds (57.73 to 58.32) for the victory. The Lady Govs swept the hurdles, with senior Amanda McCoy winning the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.35 mark and freshman Ashley Carson taking the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:05.92 second time. The 4x400-meter relay team of Scott, Carson, Obi and junior Candace Johnson won their event with a 3:59.86 mark.

"Going one-two in the 400-meter dash is always a nice way to start," said Molnar. "I was also really happy with the relay team."

In the field events, the Lady Govs showed proficiency in the jumps, winning the high, triple and long jumps. McCoy picked up another victory in the high jump, with a 1.68 meter (5-06.00) mark. Freshmen Leigha Tolliver (long jump, 5.52 meter mark) and Cenitra Hudson (triple jump, 10.47 meters) led the Lady Govs to other victories away from the track.

"McCoy had a great meet," said Molnar. "She almost got a personal best on the first day, so I expect her to keep improving during the season."
