Lady Govs track and field set several personal bests at OSU Tune-Up

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Austin Peay State University women's track and field team enjoyed several strong performances at the OSU Tune-Up, Friday, at French Field House, hosted by Ohio State, achieving several personal bests and strengthening its position in the conference leading up to next week's Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships.

"We had an outstanding day," said head coach Doug Molnar. "Top to bottom, this was probably the best meet we've had since I began coaching at Austin Peay."

In the track portion of the event, the Lady Govs were buoyed by the running of junior Chiamaka Obi, who won the 400-meter dash with a 56.62 mark, which was over half a second faster than the next closest finisher. Junior Candace Johnson (third, 59.03) and sophomore Jasmin Scott (fourth, 59.26) also finished top-five in the 400.

Meanwhile, a trio of Lady Govs also finished top-eight in the 60-meter hurdles: senior Amanda McCoy (sixth, 8.97) and freshmen Ashley Carson (seventh, 9.22) and Leigha Tolliver (eighth, 9.23) were all solid in the event. Three Lady Govs were also top-eight in the 200-meter dash, with junior Candace Cullors (fourth, 26.56) leading Carson (fifth, 26.71) and sophomore Jasmine Moody (seventh, 27.19) to the finish. The relay team of Scott, Carson, Obi and Johnson won the 4x400-meter event with a 3:58.36 mark.

"We had a number of personal and season bests on the track, which was great because it is such a flat track," said Molnar. "Carson set a personal best twice in the hurdles, then another in the 200-meter dash and capped it off with a strong leg on the relay; I couldn't be happier with her performance."

In the field, the Lady Govs were again led by senior pole vaulters Carrie Burggraf and Molly Bartkiewicz, who each achieved 3.97 meter (13-00.25) heights, with Burggraf winning the event via number of jumps. Sophomore Brianna Lococo was fifth in the vault with a career-best 3.36 meter (11-00.25) height. McCoy finished second in the high jump with a 1.62 meter (5-03.75) mark, while Tolliver continued her dominance in the long and triple jumps, winning both events. She had a 5.51 meter (18-01.00) mark in the long jump and a 10.83 meter (35-06.50) distance in the triple.

"The vaulters were their usual outstanding selves," said Molnar. "To be up over 13 feet on a consistent basis is fantastic for us as a team and them as individuals. Brianna has also really come on strong over the last few weeks to be a strong third behind our seniors. This meet put us in good position heading in to next week."
