Lady Govs track finds success in Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Austin Peay State University women's track and field team had success with a limited number of competitors at the Hoosier Hills Invitational, Friday.

Senior Amanda McCoy had a strong day for the Lady Govs, hitting 1.60 meters (5-03.00) in the high jump to finish tied for fifth and running the 60-meter hurdles in 8.94 seconds, finishing eighth.

"McCoy had strong meet," said head coach Doug Molnar. "She cleared 5' 3" with no misses and had a strong hurdles race. You can't ask for much more than that."

Senior pole vaulters Molly Bartkiewicz and Carrie Burggraf entered this meet with plans to enhance their respective chances to enter the NCAA Indoor Championships provisionally. While both vaulted well, each hitting 3.80 meters (12-05.50), leading Burggraf to a third-place finish and Bartkiewicz a fourth based on jumps, it did nothing to improve their chances of making the Indoor field.

"The vaulters were solid, but not quite what we needed," said Molnar. "They're still leading the conference, but not quite where we want to be."

Other notable performances for the Lady Govs included freshman Leigha Tolliver, who finished second in the long jump with a 5.55 meter (18-02.50) mark. Junior Chiamaka Obi won her heat and finished 11th overall in the 400-meter dash with a 58.05 mark.

"Overall, we were solid, but not spectacular," said Molnar. "Obi won her heat, but she needs to push herself to get ahead earlier. Leigha did okay, but not as good as she has been doing. We'll regroup for the Ohio State meet next week; that's a homecoming of sorts for a lot of these girls."
