CARBONDALE, Ill. - Austin Peay State University's track and field teams attempt to shake off the rust at the SASF Invitational over the weekend did not work out as planned, with only four top-10 finishes for the Lady Govs.
"We lost a little bit over the break, but not much," said head coach Doug Molnar. "We came out in the first meet and were competitive, which is all I was expecting."
In the field events, senior pole vaulters Carrie Burggraf and Molly Bartkiewicz proved to be in midseason form on Friday night. Burggraf set an Austin Peay indoor record in the vault with a 3.85 meter (12-07.50) height, finishing third in the event. Bartkiewicz finished seventh at 3.55 meters (11-07.75), just four inches shy of her season-high from 2009. Senior Amanda McCoy had a 1.61 meter (5-02.25) high jump, tying her for eighth place.
On the track, the Lady Govs saw little in the way of positive performance. The 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Ashley Carson, sophomore Jasmine Scott and juniors Chiamaka Obi and Candace Johnson finished ninth with a 4:04.90 mark. McCoy just missed a top-10 in the 60-meter hurdles, finishing 11th with a 9.19 mark.
"Overall, I'm pleased with the meet," said Molnar. "Our mile relay and McCoy were both faster than they were at this time last year. I'm also happy with how our freshmen did in their first collegiate meets."
