APSU Cross Country finishes season at the South Regionals

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Austin Peay State University men and women's cross country teams ventured down south to compete in the NCAA South Regionals, Saturday. The Govs finished 24th of 26 teams on the men's side, while the women did not record a team score.

On the men's side, senior Andre Braima led the Govs in his last race, finishing 138th out of 173 runners with a 34:51.37. Sophomore Boniface Yator was not too far behind him, finishing 149th 35:32.59, while freshman Nick Gammon came in 162nd, with a 36:40.33 mark in the 10-kilometer race.

"Enock was sharp today," said head coach Doug Molnar. "He missed two weeks of training, so I was especially pleased with his performance. There are 42 teams in our district, so to finish 24th is pretty good."

For the women, sophomore Janelle Avery finished 117th in a 170-runner race with a 23:26.07 mark in the six-kilometer race. Senior Shamai Larsen, in her final race for the Lady Govs, finished 156th with a 24:57.97 mark. Junior Tracee Gruskiewicz (25:46.05, 164th) and freshman Alyssa Molnar (27:21.06, 169th) rounded out the running for the Lady Govs.

"Janelle ran a great race; she had the second-best six-kilometer time in school history," said Molnar. "(Sophomore) Hannah Scruton actually had an allergic reaction to fire ants on the course, and couldn't finish. That kept us from getting a team score."

Host Alabama won the men's event, while Florida's Lady Gators took the women's event.
