Division II Class AA Girls
The Team Race
Coming
into the season it was hard to imagine anyone but GPS winning after a near 80
point victory in 2020 and returning four of five scoring runners while adding
another to the pack, Mariah Ivery. However, as the season progressed, Harpeth
Hall kept claiming victories over GPS, Baylor, and Webb School of Knoxville the
question for the projected favorite became is are these victories in large
fields like Southern Showcase and Jesse Owens skewed because of Bella's low
score or can Harpeth Halls depth 3-7 carry them in a smaller field and closer
race?
As the race unfolded it became too difficult to keep count.
Not to mention Briarcrest had green jerseys as well and had
runners sprinkled in the top 20 with Webb and Harpeth. Even as the race
stretched out it became too difficult to keep count. I didn't even bother
making a prediction on the twitter feed at the end of the race as I watch
parents and coaches from every school scrolling through their own finish line
video trying to tabulate scores. No one was sure until the results were posted
though and Harpeth Hall claimed a four point victory 69-73 over Webb School of
Knoxville with GPS coming in 3rd with 80 and Baylor 4th
with 89.
Now, obviously only one team was able to leave with a championship trophy this season but if you, as a fan of the sport, thought the race was exciting well you're in luck. Only four girls out of the top fifty finishers are graduating. Here's how the top five teams stack up based on returning runners.
Team | Returners from State |
Harpeth Hall | 6 |
Webb School of Knoxville | 6 |
GPS | 5 |
Baylor | 7 |
Father Ryan | 6 |
Needless to say, this will be the premier division on the girl's side moving into 2022.
