Bartlett & Brentwood: Why they won Large Division I

Bartlett Boys

When I went to the Houston Track Classic, Bartlett narrowly beat Memphis Central in the 4x400m Relay 3:32 to 3:33. It was the first meet of the season for the Warriors and what gets lost in the results of that final race is their second leg ran the ENTIRE lap in lane 8. He never cut in. If you're a superstitious person, that first mile relay might serve as an omen for what occurred in Rockvale during the final mile relay of the track and field season.

I hadn't watched this again until today because it's simply hard to watch but while we can point to this unfortunate drop as why Memphis Central lost their 2 point lead this isn't the reason why Bartlett won.

Bartlett Memphis Central
Event Wins 2 2
Events with Multiple Scorers 3 2
Total Events Scored 10 7

While the two wins by Central were expected (4x1 and 4x2) the two wins by Bartlett were not. Miles Ally was the favorite in the 800m, Landon Mcnair won by .03. Shamari Covington beat Kylan Bernard head to head twice this season in the high hurdles, Bernard beat him on Thursday. While those victories were a bonus 4 points for the Panthers, a full supporting cast showed up as well. Robert Giamo, Marico Smith, Elliot Garst, and Robert Dawson all had Personal Record performances in their events which combined for a total 14 points. If Bernard and Mcnair both get second and one of these other athletes have an all time worst day and MCHS still has the drop, we are likely looking at a Warrior win or a team overall tie.

Coach Harman's Panthers will be in good position to defend their title next season with McNair and Bernard returning.

To elaborate a little more on how balanced the victory for Bartlett was, I broke down the scoring further into event types:

Bartlett Memphis Central
Sprints 0 27
Hurdles 18 10
Distance 25 0
Relays 13 20
Horizontal Jumps 1 6
Vertical Jumps 5 0
Throws 0 0
Multis 7 0
Final Score 69 63

Obviously, with the wealth of talent returning from these squads, these are likely the favorites heading into next season and I am very much looking forward to it.

Congratulations to the Bartlett Panthers on their victory.
