Week 1 Highlights: Hutchins, Romain, Whitehaven

Girls - Distance

We have to start with Jenna Hutchins because, well how do you not? The Science Hill junior casually dropped a 4:44 1600m which is only behind her own time and Rebecca Story's. Later in the meet you posted a Tennessee #1 2:19 800m. It's at the point where my jaw has stopped dropping when I see her times now even though we're potentially witnessing the greatest high school runner of all time compete in our backyard week in and week out. I made the prediction below earlier but I should clarify... that's sub 4:30 for a full mile.

No time at this point would shock me.

While the shadow Jenna casts on other runners in the state is significant, it's not too large for others to be able to shine through. Four other girls ran sub-5:15 this week while other higher profile runners have yet to debut. Zoe Arrington ran a PR 5:06 in the same race as Jenna. Cookeville's Landri Wilcox, Ambassador's Savannah Rivera, and Farragut's Camryn Johnson also posted Elite 1600m times. Combine these girls with the likes of Jones, Vanderkolk, and Walters it's not beyond the realm of possibility that the 1600m Large Division I race in May could have an entire podium of runners under the five minute mark.

Tennessee High School Sophomore Zoe Arrington posts personal best 5:06 in the 1600m run at the Matt Newton Track Kickoff.
