The Season in Front of Us
Then there are the athletes that two years ago weren't even in high school. For example, Brentwood Academy Sophomore Mensi Stiff. She won the shot put competition at the TN State Indoor HS Championship in similarly impressive fashion as Burke tying a meet record set by Zoe Vlk in the process. Shortly after I posted the announcement about the Editor transition, I received an email from her coach:
"As food for thought heading into the 2021 outdoor season I wanted to bring a sophomore girl athlete to your attention. Her name is Mensi Stiff. In our shortened season last year she broke the BA school discus record as a freshman and had the farthest throw in TN at 138'2". The TN girls discus record (set in 1984) is 155'8" set by Angie Barker. Mensi threw a legal throw of 157'3" in practice yesterday."
There are school records and then there are school records at Brentwood Academy. If you're already the best to ever compete in Eagles program as a sophomore, it's not hyperbole to speculate that we have a potential state record holder on our hands. Throws, I'll admit, are not my area of specialty and had it not been for Coach Wade reaching out, her performances as the season progressed would've missed my radar. Now, it's a lead storyline going into week 1 competition.
