Salute to Seniors: Landon Wright

Salute to Seniors

Our salute to seniors series rolls on out of the 901.

Briarcrest senior Landon Wright signed with Samford University earlier this year. So he'll get to continue his track career regardless of what happens to conclude the high school outdoor season this spring.

Here's what he had to say about his journey through this sport over his high school career.

--- ---

What made you get into track and field in the first place and what does this sport mean to you?

I always enjoyed running and since my brother ran track, I knew I wanted to try it as soon as I hit middle school.

What was your most memorable race/competition?

Junior Olympics freshman year 400 hurdles. It was a very tough race for me because I had no coach with me and I ran with an injured hamstring. I pushed through and ended up with 2nd place in the 15-16yo division. A lot breaking my school record in the 110 hurdles that had been set for 39 years was a big accomplishment for me.

Where did you face your biggest competition?

AAU, the competition from around the country was always the most competitive and most fun.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?

1st in the nation for freshman 400hurdles and 2 state championships my sophomore year in 300 hurdles and pole vault.

If you could do it all over again, what would you change about your athletic career in high school?

I would spend more time preparing for injuries and not rushing into races.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Injuries, lots of them.

What will you miss the most?

My team.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Run hard, train harder.

How have your coaches influenced your performances and your life goals overall?

I wouldn't be where I am today without my coaches. I owe a lot of my success to them.

What are your post-high school plans?

I will continue my track career at Samford for the next 4 years.

Any shoutouts?

I would like to give a shout out to my parents for always being there for me and supporting me. Coach Ted Paduck, Coach Kent Austell, and Coach Jonathan Bernhardt for my track success.
