APSU cross country prepares for Vanderbilt

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University men and women's cross country teams will travel just down the road, Saturday, for the Vanderbilt Invitational at Nashville's Percy Warner Park. The men's 8-kilometer race will go off at 9 a.m., followed by the women's 5K at 10 a.m.

"Nine of the ten Ohio Valley Conference schools will be at this meet," said head coach Doug Molnar. "This will be a great barometer for us in competition against the conference, but also on the course where the conference championships will be run at."

On the men's side, sophomores Boniface Yator, Andre Braima and Enock Langat will lead a young bunch into this race. Senior Antonio Diaz, sophomore Evan Collins and freshmen Konnor Kessler and Nick Gammon will be counted on to solidify the last two scoring spots for the Govs.

"Before everything is said and done, our one through seven guys will be close together," said Molnar. "I'd like to see us run more as a group earlier in the race this week, but aside from that I like this team - someone different steps up every day."

For the Lady Govs, junior Shamai Larsen and sophomore Janelle Avery provide a nice one-two punch up front. That leaves three spots the Lady Govs will have to fill from seniors Kate Gauf and Tracee Gruskiewicz along with freshmen Alyssa Molnar and Hannah Scruton.

"I know it's early in the season, but we're looking for personal bests," said Molnar. "Our training isn't where it should be yet, but at the end of October (at the OVC Championships) is where it's the most important."
