Nashville City Championship: Teams to Watch

The battle for Nashville bragging rights is underway.

Pearl Cohn and East Nashville are both favorites to win another state championship this May on the guys and girls sides respectively. This weekend, they share the track at the 2019 Nashville City Championships. The meet is held at Harpeth Hall, and got underway Tuesday night with prelims.

It'll all wrap up on Friday night.

The throws duo of Corey Moseley and Elijah Simmons is a big reason why the Firebirds may be primed for a repeat.

After day one of competition, those two had already scored 34 points for Pearl Cohn in the shot put and the discus.

East Nashville girls have always been led by outstanding field events and sprinting. This year is no different.

Senior Jalena Curbeam holds the top spot in the state right now in the triple jump. East's 49.12 on Tuesday also qualified them for the final in the top spot. That's the fifth-fastest time in the state this season too, and No. 1 in Div I-Small Schools.

But for the Firebirds and Eagles, the City meet presents an opportunity to compete against teams outside its division.

Ensworth, Montgomery Bell Academy and Harpeth Hall all boast good squads. Lipscomb's Mikele Vickers is also included in a very talented field. Plus, Hillsboro has some outstanding athletes too.

After the first day of competition, MBA leads Pearl Cohn 34.5 to 34 on the guys side. There's still a long way to go, but that might end up being a phenomenal race for the city championship.

Look out for Harpeth Hall and Ensworth on the girls side, but East Nashville will be in the mix as well.

It goes to show that there isn't a weak division in Tennessee track and field this year. Every state championship is going to have to be earned this May...and each one has around three or four teams that could finish in the podium.

We'll keep you updated as the City meet rolls on all week.
