Using Google Maps Satellite view, I took an overhead look at every Division I high school the state considers a "participating school." Based on what was visible, each school was placed into three categories: Rubber Track, Asphalt Track, or Nothing.
It was a tedious task but I made sure to be as thorough as time allowed. In some cases, mostly in rural counties, when a new high school is built the old high school becomes the middle school. The new high school seemingly had no facilities on campus however the middle school had all the facilities. In these obvious cases, whatever was at the old campus was counted.
Examples:
Rubber Track
Prime Example: Blue Track Surface with distinct painted lines including a high jump sector, pole vault pit, horizontal jump runway and throwing circles in the lower right corner.
Asphalt Track
Prime Example: Clearly built to specifications with clearly painted lines. They have a high jump pit, horizontal jumps runway with what appears to be a rubber surface, and two throwing circles to the lower left. There even appears to be asphalt poured to support a vaulting pit. I imagine this location hosts meets but probably none on a week night as there are no light poles to give lighting.
Irregular Example 1: Not built to specifications although they did take time to paint lines and if you look closely they have several start/finish lines to accurately account for 400 meters. It appears there is a pit to practice horizontal jumps also.
Irregular Example 2: Again, not built to specifications but
in examining the campus this oval serves no other purpose than one to train on.
For all intents and purposes, this still counts as an asphalt surface.
Nothing
"Prime" Example: There are clearly well maintained facilities on this campus however there is nothing that resembles a running oval at this campus or any other campus that feeds into this one.
