Kayla Davis Claims 500m State Record

Kayla Davis after her High School debut

After Kayla Davis' high school debut of 1:12.70 and 38.03 it was clear that she wasn't just going to rewrite the North Carolina record books, but the national ones as well.

Yesterday at the Champion Fast Track Invitational Davis claimed her first North Carolina High School State Record with a 1:11.90 500m.  The previous record was set by current Southeast Raleigh senior Kyna Robinson of 1:12.33, which will currently sit at a US#10 All-Time Indoor performance.

Davis took down the field by over 8 seconds en route to her new state record.  Her performance is now US#6 All-Time in the event as she becomes the 7th girl in US history to break 1:12 in the event.

The national record is a tough one.  Chanelle Price (Easton Area, PA) ran 1:10.30 in 2008 which is over a second faster than Devon Williams (Towson Catholic, MD) 1:11.44 which is US#2 All-Time.  Being only a freshman Davis will have plenty of time to take down this national record.

Davis also had an impressive performance in the 300m as she improved on her previous NC#2 All-Time performance of 38.03 running 37.92.  This puts Davis at US#12 All-Time in the 300m Indoors as she trails US#6 All-Time Tamara Clark (High Point Central) who holds the North Carolina State Record and Flat Track National Record.

Davis will run the 200m and 400m next at the VA Showcase on January 18th and 19th against the strongest field she's ever competed against.  She and 51.92 400m runner Arria Minor will headline the fields.
