Salute To Seniors: Sydney McGinley - Hallandale High School

Today we salute Hallandale senior Sydney McGinley. McGinley won the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles at the 2A state championship and has yet to make her college announcement.

What was your most memorable race/moment?

When I Pr'ed with a 13.70 at districts in the 100 meter hurdles.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Honestly, my teammates were always my biggest competition.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Winning states in both of my individual events the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wish I would have worked with Coach Rashard 'SpeedMarshall' sooner in my high school career.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Tearing my quad in March my junior season. That took a really big toll on me physically and mentally, but motivated me to come back 10 times harder my senior year.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss the bonds I had with my brothers and sisters. We were more of a family than a track team really.

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

Always go to practice with a purpose. For example: "At the meet, I saw my trail leg was really slow, let me work on that today." Also, take the warmups seriously because that's one of the easiest way to get hurt.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My coach helped me believe and be more confident in myself and that the sky was the limit. If I ever had a bad race, he wouldn't get mad all we would say is "next race".

What are your college plans?

I am still decided, but I plan on majoring in Nursing.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would first like to thank God for giving me these talents I didn't know I had. Also, my mom for always believing in me and pushing me to be the greatest I can be. I would like to thank Coach Battle for bringing me to Hallandale and always being inspiring. Thank you to Coach Dawn Spann for really helping me with my recruiting process and also Coach Rashard 'SpeedMarshall' for being the reason I ran fast this season.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Always believe in yourself and go into a race with a positive attitude. If you go into a race with a negative attitude, you already lost.
