Top Performers of the Week: 3/19

Outdoor season is finally here.

And last week, a few sprinters put down impressive marks to open the new season. We take a look around the state to look at who's opening the season well outdoors.

Markeece Shufford -- West Creek High School

The junior sprinter put down the top 100m mark in the state over the weekend at the Kenwood Classic. He ran 10.64 to win the meet, which is a new personal best.

Shufford's old PR was 10.97 at the TSSAA North Sectional last spring. Not only did he run an impressive time in the 100, but he came back for a win in the 200 as well. Shufford set another personal best, winning in 22.86.

He is one of three runners to break 11 seconds in the 100 so far this outdoor season, joining Webb's Elijah Howard and Riverdale's Michael Scruggs.

Michael Scruggs -- Riverdale High School

Speaking of Scruggs, he makes this week's list as well.

The senior ran the top 200 meter time in the state with a 22.25 at the Mohawk-Warrior Invitational. He also put down the second-fastest time in the state in the 100.

Scruggs has to be one of the best overall runners in the state right now. His range from 100-200 is the best at this point of the season.

Lanea Wallace -- Houston High School

Wallace has the top 400 meter time in the state after her win at the West Tennessee Jamboree last weekend. She ran 57.74 to win against a loaded field of Memphis runners.

Wallace was also one of the top performers of the indoor season for the Memphis Jaguars.

She beat her indoor career best with that time over the weekend. But her personal best is still 57.34. Last year, she started the year off in the high-58 range. So expect a personal best for her soon at that distance.

Skylar Boogerd -- Arlington High School

Boogerd ran just two races this past indoor season. So she's in perfect shape to run some fast times on the track to open the outdoor season.

That's exactly what she did at the West Tennessee Jamboree. Boogerd won both the 1600 and 3200, setting personal best times in both. She ran 5:04 in the 1600 and 11:15 in the 3200.

Her previous career best in the 1600 was 5:18. In the 3200, her personal best was 11:44. Those are some pretty impressive breakthroughs to open up the season.

Baylor Franklin -- Wilson Central High School

Like Boogerd, Franklin opened his outdoor season with wins in the 1600 and 3200 at a local meet.

Franklin won both events at the Brentwood Academy Quad Meet in Middle Tennessee. His 9:43 ranks him tops in the state so far for 3200. His 4:32.35 places him second on the state leaderboards by just two-tenths of a second.

As meets continue to get going outdoors, we'll keep you updated on the weekend's top performers every Monday.
