Stowers upsets nation's top hurdler in 60-meter hurdles

Pendleton sophomore Jasmin Stowers upset the nation's top hurdler, Jacquelyn Coward, a senior from Tennessee, in the 60-meter hurdlers at the KTC Classic Saturday.

Stowers finished in 8.53 to Coward's 8.54.

Stowers, state record-holder in the 100-meter hurdles (13.90) was second in the preliminaries to Coward (8.43 preliminary time). Stowers ran 8.65 in the preliminaries.

Stowers' final time qualifies her for Nike Indoor Nationals in March.

Her finals time is second fastest in the nation for the 2007-2008 indoor season. Coward's 8.43 preliminary time is currently number one.

Stowers, winning heat seven of the 60-meter dash (7.67 seconds), qualified for the finals with the second fastest time, is not shown in final results.

Mann sophomore Briana Nelson finished second in her section of the 400-meter dash to Coward. Coward ran a time of 56.37 and Nelson ran 57.82, both Nike Indoor Nationals qualifying marks.

Stowers, also competing in this event, was fifth in section two in 61.01 and eighth overall.

Both Nelson and Stowers are members of Quick Striders Track Club.
