The Board of Control at its June meeting made a change in the dual meet state championships to have the Division I Dual Meet State Championships at Clarksville High School and the Division II Dual Meet State Championship at Father Ryan.  In the past the championships have been held at Clarksville High School.

With this change, it gives us the opportunity to also host in conjunction with the Division I championships at Clarksville High School an invitational meet for girls’ wrestling teams.  In wrestling, at the present time, there are three states (Texas, Hawaii, and Oregon) that now have championships in both boys’ wrestling and in girls’ wrestling.  Two other states (Washington and California) are seeing many of their schools with girls’ wrestling teams, but it has not been approved as a sanctioned sport.  We have four schools, and the possibility of two additional schools, that are interested in having a girls’ wrestling team this year.  Since it is not a sanctioned sport, the schools can obviously have this.  Red Bank and Soddy Daisy have been having girls’ wrestling teams and two dual meets for the teams for the past six years.

The proposal that the Board is being asked to consider is having a girls’ invitational dual meet championship at Clarksville High School in conjunction with the Division I Dual Meet Tournament.  This would give an opportunity for student-athletes at the schools who are competing in girls’ wrestling to be able to compete in conjunction with the Division I Dual Meet State Championships.
