ResultsATLANTA, Ga. -- Emory University had a record turnout 40 schools for this weekend's Emory Invitational at the Woodruff Physical Education Center. The Flames and Lady Flames won two events, had four runner-up finishes, four NCCAA event No. 1 performances, two Division II top 10 performances, five school records set and 14 athletes picked up 16 NCCAA qualifiers.
The Flames finished 11
th with 38 points. Emory University was the team champion with 96 points. Gulf South Conference (GSC) foe Shorter University was 18
th with 13 points.
The Lady Flames placed 14
th with 27 points, while Jacksonville State tallied 100.50 points to win the team title. Other teams from the GSC were West Georgia and Shorter. West Georgia finished fifth (45 points) and Shorter was 19
th (16 points).
"This is by far the most successful weekend of racing we have ever had. I am very pleased with how both of our teams performed," exclaimed Lee head coach Caleb Morgan.
Jessica Childers won the seeded 1500 meter run after cutting 17 seconds off her personal best with a time of 4:41.21. Anna Leinheiser of Montevallo was the closest to Childers at 4:41.54.
"Jessica made a strong push at the 400 meter mark that really strung out the field and came to the line unpressed to get her first big collegiate win," said Morgan.
Elizabeth Sillcocks and Danielle King joined Childers in the 1500 meter run. Sillcocks placed 15
th (5:01.08) and King finished 53
rd (5:31.83). In the un-seeded 1500 meter run, Sillcocks was seventh and King was 44
th.
Lee's other win came in the men's 800 meter run where the Flames claimed three of the top six spots, including the top two. Harold Smith was first with a mark of 1:52.01 (No. 1 in NCCAA) and Emmanuel Kipchumba was right behind at 1:53.98. Adam Gullette crossed the line at 1:54.00 for sixth place.
"I am excited about the effort our men put forward in the 800 meter," said Morgan. "This was Harold's first collegiate win of what I am sure is many more to come. It was a team effort and our guys really worked together to hit a fast time. This ranks Smith No. 6 in Division II after the first three weekends of outdoor competition."
Adrian Martin set two school records and placed second in the 100 and 200 meter events. Martin's time in the 100 meter dash (12.05) ranks her No. 9 in Division II currently. Shanila Chapman was first at 12.01. Martin was just 0.02 seconds behind Ebone Cobb (Albany State) with a time of 25.38 in the 200 meter run.
Olu Oyedele was 54
th in the 100 meter dash with a time of 14.43.
Cayce Bryan, Madison Riddle and Brianna Prugh took on the 800 meter run. Bryan finished ninth (2:21.15), Riddle was 16
th (2:28.38) and Prugh was 30
th (2:29.94).
Monica Allison took on the 100 meter hurdles and crossed the finish line at 19.22 (30
th). Emily Bryan was 19
th in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 1:09.74.
Audrey Smith placed eighth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:03.10 (No. 1 in NCCAA). Kaitlynn Kincer recorded a distance of 4.73 meters (25
th) in the long jump.
Alexis Qumsieh and Lauren Hart competed in the shot put. Qumsieh was 50
th with a throw of 6.47 meters, while Hart was 53
rd (4.25 meters).
Javon Jones finished the 400 meter dash in 50.76 to place 20
th. Brandon Harmon was 52
nd (55.11). Harmon also placed 48
th (24.55) in the 200 meter.
Joseph Crook, Terris Elliott, Alex Carter and Nick Eckert all ran in the seeded 1500 meter run. Crook was ninth (4:08.25), Elliott placed 21
st (4:12.30), Carter was 25
th (4:12.70) and Eckert was 27
th (4:14.33). Carter was 15
th in the un-seeded race.
Seth Eagleson, Matt Jenkins and Tim Yates ran in the seeded 5000 meter run. Eagleson placed sixth (15:17.82), Jenkins was 32
nd (16:47.16) and Yates was 38
th (17:01.66). Jenkins was 14
th in the B-Section 5000 meter run and Yates was ninth in the C-Section race.
Rick Barry earned an eighth-place finish in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.63. Camden Perez crossed the finish line of the 3000 meter steeplechase at 9:32.51 to put him in fourth in the event and record the No. 1 time in the NCCAA this season.
Barry and Hunter Goforth took to the pit to compete in the long jump. Barry finished second (6.88 meters), just 0.01 meters out of first place. Goforth recorded a distance of 6.43 meters (16
th).
