Ensworth, Northeast have pentathlon champions

Staff reports

MURFREESBORO – Northeast's Brittany Kelly repeated as Class AAA pentathlon champion, and Ensworth's Tyra Gittens won the Division II title with the highest point total of the day Monday at Middle Tennessee State.

Gittens had 3,563 points to beat Brentwood Academy's Megan Meadow (3,419).

"She put together a great day," Ensworth coach Jonas Rodriguez said. "She had personal bests in the high jump (5-10) and the shot put (34-6) and did really well in her other three events. We thought she had a great shot at winning after her region performance and what she's done in those events this year. It wasn't a certainty by any stretch of the imagination, though. It was an incredibly competitive field this year. There were a lot of girls with a shot to win."

Kelly had 3,493 points, beating teammate Sonja White (3,254).

Kelly won three events. She finished first in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.4 seconds and broke the school record in the 800-meter run in 2:26.62. She also took first in the high jump at 5-3¾.

"I approached Monday as if I was trying to reach personal-best times in all the events I competed in," said Kelly, an Ole Miss signee. "And it was kind of also a preview in terms of getting a chance to see some of the competitors I'll face later this week in some of those same events like the hurdles and high jump."

Knoxville Catholic's Camille Baker won the Class A/AA pentathlon with 3,105 points, and M.L. King's Paige Fairrow-Davis finished second at 2,971.
