WILLIAMS VOTED SOUTH REGION INDOOR TRACK ATHLETE OF THE YEAR
Rubin Williams earned the first postseason honor of the year Tuesday as he
was named South Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year by the U.S. Track &
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Williams won the 200 at the SEC Indoor Championships while recording the
fastest time in the nation. His 20.57 clocking stands as an indoor
personal-best time and leads the NCAA by almost two-tenths of a second.
The seven-time All-America also finished third in the 60 at the SEC
championships with a personal-best time of 6.65. His time ties him with Sean
Lambert for fourth on Tennessee’s all-time performance list in the event and
ranks him eighth on the national list. Williams is scheduled to compete in the
60 and 200 at this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
Williams’ honor marks the second consecutive year a Tennessee athlete was
voted regional Athlete of the Year. Aries Merritt was named the 2006 South
Region Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.
Auburn’s Cory Martin was awarded South Region Indoor Field Athlete of the
Year and Florida State coach Bob Braman earned South Region Indoor Coach of
the Year. A complete listing of winners from all nine regions can be found at
