Second recap of the beginning of the Texas high school track season.

Hey it’s Oceane, back to give you this week’s recap. We’re still at the very beginning of the season and many have yet to race, but that doesn’t stop others from running fast times. Unfortunately there are no interviews this week, but I will give you my predictions at the end of the recap.
Starting with the hurdles, Alexis Duncan ran 13.86 for the 100m hurdles and currently holds the season record. Justin Gerbrecht ran 14.26 in the 110m hurdles, and in the 300m hurdles LaCarol Baynes ran 43.01 and Chevis Armstead ran 38.11.
Talajah Murrell continues to dominate the 200m dash, as she set another season record with a time of 24.14. In the boys, Andrew Hudson ran 21.34.
We also had some great performances in the 1600; though none of the girls surpassed Madi McLellan’s 4:56 from last week, Evelyn Chavez ran 5:03 and Alex Cruz ran 5:09. The boys are separated by tiny margins, but the fastest time of the week went to Alonzo Pollum with 4:24.
The girl’s 3200 was also quite impressive, and taking the lead once again is Madi McLellan with a 10:27 3200. We also had Evelyn Chavez run 10:47 before she ran a 5:03 mile, and Julia Heymach and Abby Guidry both finish in 10:54.
Some standout relays were the 4x2 girls where Cedar Hill finished in 1:39.81, the boy’s 4x2 lead by Schertz Steele in a 1:26.47 and the girl’s 4x4 from The Woodlands in a time of 3:54.44.
The girl’s top runner of the week goes to…Evelyn Chavez for running two amazing races in the 1600 and 3200. The boy’s top runner of the week goes to…Andrew Hudson for running a blazing fast 200.
For the girls, I predict that Talajah Murrell takes home the 100 and 200m state titles. There hasn’t been much data for the 400 and 800, but the 1600 should definitely be a good race. Last year, Madie Boreman took home the 4A state title with a time of 4:48…as a freshman. Her cross country season wasn’t as exceptional, but I would still put her in the mix with Natalie Rathjen and Evelyn Chavez. Madi McLellan has been running insane times, but we’ve seen her peek too early before. If she continues to improve, she will give Paige Hofstad and Devin Clark a run for their title. And let’s not forget freshman Julia Heymach, who placed 2nd at the 5A state cross country meet.
For the boys, Andrew Hudson has a good chance of winning the state title in the 200. Frank Lara, the 5A XC state champion, hasn’t raced yet but is definitely in the mix for the mile and 2 mile, as well as Steven Galli and the 4A state champion, Carter Blunt.
