BOARD OF CONTROL MINUTES

August 21, 2006

1. Roll Call

2. Approved Minutes of June 2006 Meeting

3. The Board of Control voted to authorize the Executive Director to select sites and make plans for conducting regional and state tournaments or meets in golf, tennis, cross country, track, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, and bowling.

4. Approved Financial Aid for the 2006-2007 School Year

5. Voted for Division II to go to two classes in all sports except bowling, wrestling, and track for the 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 school years.

18. Voted to continue paying the $30.00 fee for first year's membership fees to the National Federation Coaches Association for our state winners.

19. Voted to approve the following in regards to Local Officials' Associations:

The fee charged by the local association is left up to the association and the schools they service. Any changes in fees should be done by a cooperative effort between the leaders of the association with the schools having input concerning any proposed fee change. This could be a committee of representatives of both groups with input from all schools and the association.

The fees charged for regular season contests would include home games and any invitational tournament(s) hosted by the school the association is servicing. The association may not charge an extra fee for assigning officials in invitational tournaments.

The association may not charge a fee to districts and regions for assignment of officials to any postseason tournament.

Voted to ask each association to come up with a plan that is fair, equitable, and uniform to
charge officials and school.


20. Approved request of White House Heritage High School to remain in Region 5 in football.

21. Denied request of Comcast Cable Communications Permission to Televise Live Football Playoff Games

22. Approved Membership Request of Community High School in Nashville. Voted to waive one year affiliate membership to allow Community High School in Nashville to compete in post-season tournaments in bowling.

23. Approved regional basketball format request from Region 1A to play both championship games on Thursday night rather than the girls' championship on Wednesday and the boys' championship on Thursday.

Denied regional basketball format request of Region 6AA that all games on Friday and Saturday be played at the central tournament site rather than the first and second place teams of each district hosting the first round games.

24. Approved the addition of the following Non-Discrimination Policy Statement to the website and to TSSAA policies until Legislative Council can act on it at either the December or March meeting to be placed in the TSSAA Handbook. The Non- Discrimination Policy Statement reads as follows:

It is the policy of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) to refrain from discrimination within its own governance, programs, activities and employment policies. TSSAA is committed to the policy that all persons shall have equal access to programs, facilities, admission and employment without regard to personal characteristics not related to ability or performance. To that end, TSSAA does not discriminate on the basis of age, color, disability, gender, national origin, race, or religion.

It is the responsibility of each member school or institution to determine independently its own policy regarding nondiscrimination.

Each local officials' organization approved by TSSAA, as a condition of such approval, must either agree to abide by this non-discrimination policy statement or adopt a non-discrimination policy of its own that includes at a minimum the prohibitions on discrimination contained herein.
