Arkansas runners take titles at Twilight Classic

Cordova senior Jaymes McCargo was spent but happy as his furious final kick took fifth place (16:31.23), and led the Wolves to a runnerup team finish. Senior Patrick Jaeger of Houston took seventh (16:33.36).

The area's two top sophomore girls dueled to the wire as Caroline Cook of St. Agnes (19:17.52) nipped Abigail Topham (19:18.32) for fifth place. Junior Madison Lessley of St. Benedict (19:45.46) took 10th.

Bowling Green (Ky.) won the girls team title. Houston, led by a 26-28 finish from freshmen Emma Reid and Kathryn Peterson, took fourth. The Mustangs also dominated the JV races, taking the boys title over Cordova and finishing second in the girls standings behind Notre Dame (Ky.).

Preps Cross Country Outlook

Cordova is the defending Region 7-AAA champions, and the Wolves should be strong again this year. BOP finalist James McCargo leads a talented squad, along with Tyler Brown, Drew Eckels, Cam Walton, Corwin Clark, Will Strickland and Dalton Alexander. ...

...BOP cross country runner of the year, Abigail Topham of Cordova is back to lead the Wolves. She ran 19:26 last year at state to place seventh overall. ...

West Tennessee Cross Country races

Alden Dixon was surrounded by Cordova’s Wolfpack, led by senior Jaymes McCargo. But early in the second lap, Dixon caught McCargo at the start of a long downhill pull. It was downhill after that for Dixon, who ran the 5K Champions course in 16:33, eight seconds up on McCargo. Cordova’s Tyler Brown (16:59) and Drew Echols (17:09) finished 3-4, with six Wolves in the first 11.

There were many different approaches to this first race of the season. Houston sat the starters on its boys team. Meanwhile Cordova sophomore Abigail Topham, last year’s BOP Girls Cross Country winner, was content to stay in the pack with a largely new group of teammates.

“They’d never run this course, and today all I wanted to do is show them how to do it,” said Topham, a regional champion and seventh-place finisher at state.

St. Mary's swimmer 4-time Pepsi Best of the Preps winner

Cordova senior Ryan Heaston, who won MIAA Athlete of the Year honors after winning the state AAA 400 and helping the Wolves to a pair of relay wins at Murfreesboro, cradled his trophy with one of the night's biggest smiles.

"Since eighth grade ... I saw and knew I wanted it," said Heaston, who will run for Missouri State.

Kacey Nobert of St. Agnes wasn't able to equal the feat in cross country, as gifted Cordova freshman Abigail Topham took that honor over the three-time defending champion. However, Nobert did win the girls track and field award after capturing the state 3,200-meter title and helping the Stars win the 3,200-meter relay.

Track: Fayette-Ware senior charges to three sprint titles

Cordova, led by its Class AAA state champion 400- (41.43), 800- (1:27.31) and 1,600-relay (3:20.82) teams, finished runnerup behind Brentwood in the team competition with 59 points. The Wolves had 49 points and were in third place going into the final event, the 1,600 relay, but needed Brentwood to finish sixth or lower in the race while they finished first to earn the AAA team title.

While Cordova took care of its part, winning the final relay, Brentwood finished third to secure the title with 61 points. Cordova senior Ryan Heaston, who's headed to Missouri State to play football, earned the Wolves a fourth gold medal individually with his first-place finish in the 400 (48.58).

"He's an exceptional leader. He's an incredible athlete," first-year Cordova coach Matt Doll said. "He was (Class AAA team) state champion as a sophomore, and I don't know anybody more competitive."

Houston, like Cordova, was in the thick of the AAA team competition. The Mustangs led after 17 events with 56.5 points, but didn't have any qualifiers in the final two events, opening the door for Brentwood and Cordova to surpass them.
