Chattanooga, TN – Saturday morning over 1,200 athletes will contest the fields and slopes of the Chickamauga Dam with the Tennessee River as the backdrop in the annual Chattanooga Cross Country Festival. This year’s race features Varsity, Junior Varstiy, Middle School and Collegiate Races that start at 9:00am with the boy’s junior varsity and end with the men’s college race at 3:00pm.

The boy’s high school race includes thirty-three squads from surrounding states. The top teams look to be local power McCallie and the Trojans from Morristown-West High School. However, border jumpers North Hall (Georgia) and Spain Park (Alabama) could be in the mix for the title.

Morristown’s sophomore Quintin McKinnish looks to lead his team to the title with a shot at the individual crown as he comes off last weekend’s victory at the Tennessee Classic at Percy Warner Park in Nashville. McCallie will be led by sophomore Matthew Jones. Jones and the Tornado have one race under their belt this fall. Other athletes with an opportunity for the top spot are Spain Park’s Brandon Hazouri, Baylor’s Simon Holden, and North Hall’s Brandon Lawson. At the front pack on Saturday you’ll find Lenoir City’s Nathan Jones, as well as local standout’s Nick McCormick (East Hamilton) and the duo from Bradley Central in Paul Patterson and Harold Smith.

The girl’s version will feature 29 teams and should be a nice battle between returning state champion Baylor and a young Morristown-West program. Webb School of Knoxville and Georgia’s North Hall have an outside chance at the crown as well.

Morristown has a solid front three led by twin freshmen in Chantal and Cherie Wilson, as well as sophomore Haylea Seals. The Lady Trojans will need their four and five to run much better to handle Baylor, which has juniors Haley Chandler and Ruthie Townsend at the front and learning to lead after last year’s roster graduated four of the state’s best. Webb School’s Natalie Richie and Spain Park’s Madeline Held have the best shot at the individual victory, while local standouts Beka Day (Cleveland) and Madalyn Garland (Rhea County) could factor into the podium.
