Cross country team runs at state

Five local cross country runners were part of a field of 917 from 102 schools that took part in the Tennessee State Middle School Cross Country Championship Saturday in Knoxville.
There were 256 runners in the boys’ 2-mile race where eighth-grader Javan Winders placed 13th with a time of 12 minutes, 15 seconds and his sixth-grade brother, Titus, was 15th in a time of 12:16.
Henry County middle school cross country coach Lance Winders is the father of the two boys. He said Javan, who was one of the pre-race favorites to win, struggled from the start and never got in a rhythm Saturday.
