Approximately 500 people descended upon the Voyles Farm in Cassville Saturday morning for the second annual Backyard Invite cross country race.
One year after its inception, the race has grown by leaps and bounds and is setting the stage for a huge regional meeting to be run on the same course on October 27th.

This year’s event hosted 255 runners from 17 teams. Last year, the race had 74 entries from seven teams.
The course is quite different from your ordinary cross country course with runners running through a field and then on a path cleared through the woods. A challenging trail it is with a few hills.
White County girls took fifth out of eight girls’ team scoring a total of 109 points. Rhea County won the girls race with 56 points. Cookeville, in a tiebreaker took second with 66 points followed by Macon County in third. Fourth place went to Cumberland County.
Coach Mark Voyles commented, “I am very pleased with our team’s performance today. We really stepped up against some of our region rivals. We held a couple of key runners out of today’s race to rest their legs. Morgan Voyles and Hannah McCoy didn’t run. Alex Stover was scheduled to sit out, but decided to run, this being her senior year.”
