CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State
University's track and field team had several strong individual performances in
its final home meet of the outdoor season.
The field events were where the Lady Govs
shined Saturday, with an Austin Peay athlete winning every jump event. Coming
back from injury, senior Carrie Burggraf qualified for the NCAA Regionals in
her first outdoor meet of the season, winning the event with a 3.88 meter
(12-08.75) mark. Senior Amanda McCoy won the high jump with a 1.65 meter
(5-05.00) height, while freshman Leigha Tolliver took first in the long jump
with a 5.34 meter (17-06.25) distance. Freshman and recent team addition Zakia
Alcantara won the triple jump with a 9.61 meter (31-06.50) mark.
"Carrie qualified for regionals when we
didn't even think she would be jumping as recently as Thursday," said head
coach Doug Molnar. "McCoy is becoming very consistent in the 5-5, 5-6 range; I
think she can get the school record by the end of the season."
Junior Chiamaka Obi led the way for the Lady
Govs on the track, winning the 200-meter dash in her season's first attempt with a 25.14 second mark and running the third
leg of the 4x400-meter relay, which the Lady Govs won with a 3:57.36 mark.
Austin Peay also had strong showings in the hurdles, with McCoy (14.65) and
Tolliver (15.16) finishing first and second, respectively. Sophomore Janelle Avery turned in a good 800-meter run, finishing second in 2:24.27.
"Obi was strong in the 200, for her first
attempt at it this season," said Molnar. "Overall, I'm pretty excited about how
today went. It was a solid, workman-like effort from everyone and you can't ask
for much more than that."
