Three Named All-Academic by USTFCCCA

Chattanooga track and field athletes Anneli Uys, Chris Berry and Michael Danehy were selected to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Association's (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team for indoor and outdoor track.

 

Uys, a junior, qualified for the NCAA Region meet in both the women's 800 meter and 1500 meter events and claimed the titles in both at the Southern Conference championships. She is a pre-major with a cumulative GPA of 3.726.

 

Berry, a sophomore pre-major with a 3.733 GPA, claimed the conference title in the men's 5000 meter run and earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Region Outdoor meet. At the league's indoor championships, Berry won the 5000 meter race and was passed at the finish line in the 3000 meter race to claim second place and all-conference honors.

 

Danehy won the men's 800 meter race at the league outdoor championships despite falling in the qualifying and finishing dead last. After an appeal, he was allowed to run in the ninth spot for the finals and claimed the automatic NCAA Region bid. He also won the 800 meter indoor event. Danehy has an overall GPA of 3.842 in Business with an emphasis in Accounting.

 

A record total of 327 student-athletes representing 107 Division I institutions made up the men's 2009 All-Academic team.

 

The University of Nebraska led all institutions with 16 student-athletes on the All-Academic team, followed by Brigham Young University with 12 student-athletes on the team. University of Oregon placed 11 student-athletes on the team.

 

The Big 12 Conference led all conferences with 46 selections, with the Pacific-10 Conference following closely with 42 selections. The Mountain West Conference had 28 men's student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.

 

A record total of 530 student-athletes representing 146 Division I institutions composed the women's 2009 All-Academic team.

 

The University of Nebraska led all institutions with 19 student-athletes on the All-Academic team. Brigham Young University and the University of Oregon followed with 16 student-athletes each on the All-Academic team.

 

The Pacific-10 Conference led all conferences with 56 selections, with the Big 12 Conference following closely with 50 selections. The Southeastern Conference had 48 women's student-athletes earn All-Academic honors.

 

The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.

 

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either the NCAA Division I Indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I Outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
