Hengst Drops 4:08 Mile In Tennessee

Dalton Hengst put down one of the fastest miles in Pennsylvania history over the weekend.

At Saturday night's Music City Distance Carnival in Nashville, Tennessee, Hengst took second in a strong elite high school boys' mile field in a time of 4:08.44. That time is the second fastest outdoor full mile in state history (according to the MileSplit database) behind only Craig Miller in 2004.

The race was originally supposed to feature Josh Hoey and Brodey Hasty, but Hoey scratched and Hasty switched to the 3K, where he clocked a US No. 2 all-time performance. The field was still strong, though. Cameron Ponder from North Carolina ran a US No. 1 of 4:04.24 for the victory.

Hengst took control of the race with 600 meters to go when the pacer stepped off. But then Ponder took the lead with 300 meters to go and maintained from there to the finish to take the win. For Hengst, who is competing unattached this spring, it's still a PR and and PA No. 1.
