Brentwood Expecting Big Points in Decathlon

Brentwood High School is looking for another team championship next week in Murfreesboro.

But before their runners even hit the track, the Bruins have a huge opportunity to score lots of points in the multi events. The decathlon will be a major opportunity for Brentwood to get off to a good start.

To begin with, Jett Kinder comes in as the top seed. Kinder scored 6,334 points in the sectional meet. Kinder has an impressive 6-8 in the high jump that really sets him apart from this field of talented athletes.

In the sectional meet, Kinder put down a new personal best in the long jump. He jumped 22-06, which scored him 652 points. He won five events in the qualifier -- the shot put, discus, high jump, long jump and pole vault.

With his personal best in the high jump, Kinder scored 831 points. That's the most in any single event for anyone at the sectional competition. Most of his best events will come in the second day. He won all three field events in the second day of competition. So you can expect a big finish from the Brentwood sophomore.

Last year, Kinder finished second in his first state competition. He wasn't far behind Memphis Central senior Rashad Haynes. With that experience behind him and a few new personal bests in the field events, Kinder is the favorite.

And his top competition walks the hallways with him in Williamson County.

Seniors Garrett Lee and Kyle Costner are seeded second and third after their good performances at the sectional meet as well.

Costner, an Arkansas signee, won the AAU Club National Championship in the decathlon last summer in Orlando. That's another big stage performance that helps out a lot this time of year.

The Bruins are hoping for 24 points after the first event in the state meet.

Here's the full list of qualifiers.
