Gautier Adds Hasty, Christian to 2016-17 Rosters

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga cross country and track and field head coach Bill Gautier announced the addition of Gavin Hasty and Madeline "Maddy" Christian.

"The Hasty family is well known in the running community in Tennessee," Gautier said. "To have a runner from that family and Brentwood is great for our program. He brings lots of experience that will be important to us."

Hasty, a 2014 graduate of Brentwood High School, ran one season for the Montana Grizzly before transferring to Chattanooga over the summer. He placed fourth in his inaugural race for the Grizz and was his team's first runner across the finish line. He was the first or second finisher for Montana over his next four meets.

He led Montana to a sixth place finish at the Big Sky Championships, finishing ahead of its biggest rival, Montana State.

In his senior season, Hasty earned all-state honors with a fifth place finish at the championships, helping his team to the title. He claimed the region individual title and place fourth in the Nike Southeast Regional in Cary, N.C. He helped his team to a 14th place finish at the Nike Nationals in Portland, Ore., as a senior.

He is a three-time all-state track and field performer, placing third in the 1600 meter as a senior.

Christian will join the women's cross country and track and field teams this season. She earned all-state honors as a member of the Hardin Valley Academy's 4x800 meter relay team.

"Hardin Valley has produced a lot of great quality runners," Gautier said. "They have great coaches and teams are always in contention. Maddy comes from a strong running program and we are fortunate to have her."

The Chattanooga men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2016 season Saturday, September 3 at the Belmont Invitational in Nashville, Tenn.
