Tracks Heads to WCU Beynon Catamount Classic

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men's and women's track and field teams headed out Friday afternoon for the Beynon Sports Surfaces Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina in Cullowhee, N.C.

Saturday's trace events begin with the 4x100 meter relay at 12:10 and the field events kick off with the shot put at 12:15 p.m.

Chattanooga will begin with the women's 1500 meter at 12:25 p.m. Sophomore Jessica York (Normandy, Tenn.) who ranks seventh in the SoCon standings, will run in Section 1 along with freshman Emily Drouin (Verona, Ontario), ranked 11th. Senior Keeley Stewart (Winchester, Tenn.) ranks 23rd in the league standings in the 1500m and will run in Section 6.

In the men's 1500 meter run, senior John Gilpin (Nashville, Tenn.) along with junior Austin Casassa (Nashville, Tenn.) and sophomore Paul Stuart (Brentwood, Tenn.) will run in Section 1 with junior Matthew Marshall (Signal Mtn., Tenn.) in Section 2.

Freshman Drake Watson (Gallatin, Tenn.) will represent the Mocs in the men's 110 meter hurdles. Watson's time of 16.17 at the Alabama Relays is tied for 12th in the league standings. He is ranked fifth in the 400 meter hurdles and will compete in that event Saturday as well.

Junior DeQuantez Sandifer (Nashville, Tenn.), who ranks among the SoCon's Top 25, will run the men's 400 meter dash and junior Iman Isang (Chattanooga, Tenn.), ranked 20th in the league, will run the men's 100 meter dash.

The Mocs will be well represented in the 800 meter run with third-ranked sophomore Maddison Melchionna (Afton, Tenn.) leading the way with a season-best time of 2:13.65 clocked at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic last weekend. Joining her in the 800m will be senior Amanda Cotter (Bristol, Conn.), junior Makala Diggs (Box Elder, S.D.), ranked 15th, and sixth-ranked sophomore Hannah Chamblin (Memphis, Tenn.).

In the men's 800 meter run, juniors Trevor Janssen (Jordan Station, Ontario), Marquis Carter (Memphis, Tenn.) and Patrick O'Brien (Chattanooga, Tenn.) along with Gilpin and Stuart will compete for the Mocs in the middle distance race.

Chattanooga will look to field two relay teams in the 4x400m race and freshman Nicole Sumeda (Chattanooga, Tenn.) will compete in the women's high jump.
